full playthrough beginning-to-end notes on mgs3 after my responses, so prepare yourself for a bit of a read
>Punching enemies in the dick is a OHKO
yeah i just recently discovered that, and you can do it from behind as well. also recently discovered how to prevent a guard from ducking your grab from the front (punch them beforehand).
>Metal gear ray
don't get me wrong, it's a decent boss, i was just letting off some steam because of how long it takes and because i died once
>vamp 1 on hard mode
i didn't even think about using the stinger, i just shot him when he was underwater and followed him around until he was forced come up because he was out of breath, which then he's really open to being shot after. also, not sure how useful this is and i'm not 100% sure this wasn't me visually misreading this happening, but i'm pretty sure you can dodge his attack where he runs up on you by crouching.
>music
what's your favorite MGS in terms of music? it's 2 for me. MGS1 has atmospheric gameplay music, it has The Best Is Yet To Come which is a stunning song, and i couldn't argue that MGS1 doesn't have the best Alert music, it's just too iconic. but overall, 2 kills it; the general gameplay theme is amazing and by far the best one out of all the games, then there's the boss themes, the track in the sniping section, the best version of the main theme, i mean there's just so many killer, killer tracks.
3 is my least favorite musically. sure, there's the Snake Eater theme but that really does all the heavy lifting. i'm not fond of the Alert theme and there's no music during the general gameplay. obviously i get that the "soundtrack" is supposed to be the sounds of the wilderness/jungle locales but i've just never been a fan of that approach.
mgs3:
man, that was a whole lot of cutscenes in the beginning
the section past the huge swamp with alligators in it was pretty brutal, i was doing good for a while but it eventually spun out of control into a domino chain of dogs and guards waking up
Para-medic, oh my lord... she is so insanely adorable and sweet and her voice is sex for the ears, i could listen to her talk all day. what a peach.
the "press a button for first-person view in select moments" during cutscenes is a great feature
the cqc in this is amazing, it's been really nice to see the evolution of the melee/cqc system
press R1 to see tits, God bless Kojima
Snake nerding out about the custom 1911 for 5 minutes (classic)
about my comment on mgs2's codec, i meant in regards to optional but not hidden calls. both of these games have a crazy amount of secret calls but i'm too dumb to think outside of the (cardboard) box that much in my initial playthroughs and i imagine basically everyone's the same way, so it's nice to have some baseline codec content in there (that isn't part of the main plot).
Roy recently geeked out about Perfect Dark's limb damage/reactions recently and i had the same experience in mgs2 and 3. shoot a guard in the leg, they limp and move slower, shoot their right arm and they drop their weapon, etc. and in 3 i noticed a guard eventually sit down and patch up their injuries and they were fixed afterwards, is that in 2 as well?
mgs2 and 3 in the Master/HD collection is washed out as hell-- really desaturated and the contrast is bright as well. i'm guessing it's because the original versions were intentionally graded that way to counter-act the nature of CRT televisions and Bluepoint didn't adjust the values for modern screens in the ports. i fixed it in ReShade but if you're on console then you'd have to adjust your tv settings. highly recommend doing this, it can't be overstated at how much difference it makes.
your food goes rotten when you're out of the game long enough
guns are so useful in 2/3 even when playing non-lethally. non-lethal guns obviously, but also shooting radios out, shooting limbs, hold ups, distractions.
shooting out guard radios is such a tense, orgasmic experience and the reward of not having to deal with reinforcement is awesome. Infinity, you said you had trouble with it in 3. even with a sniper?
Ocelot boss. you can shoot his hat off, grenades flush him out of cover.
after 5-10 minutes i was like "why can i see in the cave now" and then it hit me: Snake's eyes are adjusting to the darkness of the cave.
The Pain boss. i thought "maybe the smoke grenade will get the armor-made-of-bees off him" and it actually worked. does the bug juice work against all bee attacks or just the red hornets?
love the russian glowcap codec convo, Para-medic losing her shit over Snake saying that eating them recharges his batteries and her off-mic convo with Sigint
near the compound where you can use a scientist disguise, you can use the disguise outside and you won't get an immediate alert, the guard says "running away, huh?" and i was able to just run inside without any issues. but later i see that if you let a guard run up to you he'll toss you in the cell inside the compound.
The Fear. beat him quickly. i'm not taking out bosses non-lethally in this first playthrough and he went into a loop of jumping between trees in front of me while i unloaded my entire ak into him. also, thermal makes it ez.
according to Para-medic, when you catch a cold you'll shake. i assume the controller will vibrate?
dirt kicks up into the air when you walk which is a great detail but what's crazy is that if you're right near the edge of something, the dirt falls off the edge
try knifing a tree and watch as it cuts into the bark
if Para-medic is saying something that's confusing Snake, you can see his puzzled reaction on the codec screen in the background, that's good stuff
The End. this was my favorite boss as i assume it is for most people.
according to Zero, he lowers his body temperature so he doesn't show up as well on thermal
first time i'm using the Directional Radar
did the rain just wash away his footprints? jesus
Para-medic just tried to spook me out of saving during this boss, what the hell was that about? i remember the trick of waiting a long time/setting your clock forward enough that he'll die of old age (which is amazing) but this sounds like if i'm outside of the game for a while he'll slaughter me.
The End welcomes you back if you exit the arena and come back
covering his exits with claymores before engaging him is a great time
you can hold him up? whoa. and he gives up a unique camo if you point your gun at him enough.
had a really tense moment where he pinned me while i was in the middle of a forest and i had to use the cover of trees and smoke grenades to get out of his kill zone
this dude's drinking up the rays with his photosynthesis ability. praise the sun
alright, got him by repeatedly following his footsteps. thermal made it ez.
high-altitude in the mountains, stamina burns more quickly
vultures go to dead bodies
who could possibly be seduced by Eva when Para-medic is waiting for you? get real, it's not even a decision.
oh the ladder part with the Snake Eater theme, classic. love how it's timed to finish as soon as you get to the top.
The Fury boss
you can shoot the pipes to make water come out, nice
this is the hardest boss so far for me, that fire does so much damage
i annihilated him with my SVD
my biggest criticism of this game and my only significant issue in terms of gameplay is that it doesn't save your backpack after you hit Continue. so whenever you die in an area or a boss or bite the death pill to restart, you have to re-set your shit every single goddamn time. that is b-r-u-t-a-l-l-y tedious. only other thing is that you have a tendency to get stuck on the geometry of the level when crawling but that's no big deal.
Eva said that Raikov was gay so i got the idea of seeing what would happen if i used a sexy magazine on him. it didn't work; he just walks up to it, gives a little chuckle, and walks away. the detail in these games never cease to amaze me.
time passing outside the game also recovers your life and stam
i cartoonishly fumbled for my controller when The Sorrow flashed the frequency in the cutscene as if my very life was on the line. barely got it.
ah, it opens the cell
Para-medic informed me that not wearing clothes makes me lose stamina quicker because of Snake losing body heat, but stuff like a cardboard box will keep you warmer. it's just crazy how much they accounted for with the stamina system.
i held someone up with an empty single action revolver but accidentally fired and when the guard heard the click noise he immediately turned around and rocked me, holy shit
The Sorrow. this is a really clever puzzle boss, and a classic troll. i figured out that i need to kill myself and use the revival pill.
i found a Maintenance outfit that lets you get away with walking around in the Shagohod part, it's in one of the lockers right before you walk in
Volgin boss. you can lay down to duck his bullets. was too afraid to shoot at Ocelot because he wasn't bothering me and he was rooting for me, i'll see what that does next time.
in the Eva escort part, you can review her medical history. "breast augmentation", a few "broken nail", and a lot of beatings.
i like this escort section, it's what Emma's should have been in 2. as demonstrated here, it's just as simple as incorporating an escort mission within the actual stealth gameplay.
the on-rails bike chase section is the only part in this game i don't like. i hate on-rails shooting sections to begin with and this goes on wayyyyyy too long, AND it ends in the only bad boss fight in the game. even the 2nd part of the boss seems pretty lame.
alright, finished 3
i gotta say, i'm really surprised... that i didn't like 3's story. 2 absolutely slaughters this game in terms of narrative. mgs3 is a superb game; love playing it, love Para-medic, but the story? i was more than a little checked out to be honest. and that ending? did not shed a single manly tear-- shit, i got more emotional seeing Para-medic in the background in the end than i did about all the bullshit they were trying to get me to drop tear about. just fuckin brutal.
anyway, will be starting a second playthrough in 3 shortly, and i'm still playing VR missions in mgs2
