Anyone played Saga Frontier? Looks interesting. Can't find any videos that go over the system (or at least not in a way I can understand).

I don't think I'll bother with Valkyria Chronicles 4. These games punish you for not speedrunning.

Yeah the part about switching was one of the highlights for me when I got into its competative scene back in Gen3 (Battlenet!). It is so underutilized in the singleplayer it's a big shame.

Never dove into the ROMhack scene for these games though. Sounds interesting.

Anyone into the Star Ocean series? I may have asked this before but forgot.

I got 5 somewhere and might look into it soon. Chose it over others as it seems to be generally disliked.

Good thread by Khayaam on modern action-rpgs and where Tales seems to be going. Painful read too though, especially the comments and citations.

Yeah, this has been sad to read through. Very eloquently explained though!

Iframes in general have become extremely abused, they have a perfectly legitimate place but not like this. Flashy > deep seems to be the mantra, unsurprisingly.

Also in a thread about bosses, no mention of Monster Hunter (please forgive me for bringing this up again, I can't help it), an action series with RPG elements that has historically had to reinvent huge portions of action game mechanics for the sole purpose of perfecting boss design.

Seems like there would be many, many, many extremely valuable lessons to be learned from a series like that........

I seriously don't understand how people think you can't make a boss that's simultaneously staggerable, and difficult. Even in the series they most often cite, Souls, has a counterexample with the Crow of Cainhurst being one of the hardest fights in the game, and that guy flinches to normal attacks.

As I've said: I really like the Souls games. But they've really poisoned the well in terms of game discourse. Difficulty options in and of themselves are "objectively bad design". Every action game must conform to souls design in terms of combat, and bosses. Stray from that at all? You're either totally unfair, and/or a button masher.

The most annoying thing about the responses are how many of them either almost get it ("I'd rather have bosses with GOOD tells that reward you for your skill for paying attention and dodging"), and how many other longtime Tales fans are dogpiling on K.

> flash over substance

I actually think it's quite the opposite. It's way flashier to pull off crazy combos on an enemy. Rather, it seems that the pendulum has swung so far against style over substance (Which I can understand why people are sick of that), that people now assume that lacking style means you have substance.

>Style vs. Substance

Hmmmm, didn't think of it like that. "Flashy stuff is just button-mashing, no real skill there. Perfect dodges are simple and timing based, so they must have depth, right?"

I've been at odds with the style over substance people recently though, so perhaps that has clouded my viewpoints for other issues.

You guys all on there too? Worth making an account?

What does he do to get around that?

I'm pretty active on there, I know Firma, Khayaam, Ayaan and Hotpocket are there too and a few others as well. Twitter is more random though, not full on discourse.

The character count is TRASH. I had to reply to myself to get all the info across and I was STILL shortening it.

Yeah it's not like these forums, but it does have a few people I never see posting anywhere like SetnaroX posting stuff so it's cool to be able to just reply to them.

Sometimes I use pastebin.com to make longer posts, or Twitlonger, or threads (basically reply to yourself). But it's more for quick notes and takes and updates on what you're doing.

HotPocketHPE wrote:Pokemon's battle system is actually pretty good, especially for PvP. As Roy mentioned, there are a lot of different mechanics to take advantage of, like typings, buffs/debuffs (attack/speed buffs are extremely powerful in Pokemon), status, weather, entry hazards, etc.

But the problem is that what really make things interesting in single battles is switching, and the AI basically never does this in an interesting way. This is a fundamental flaw of the series, made even worse if you don't turn Shift off, which lets you switch for free whenever you get a KO.

You can kinda sidestep the problem by doing what Colosseum/XD do and make everything a double battle, where switching is slightly less needed. You can also take the ROMhack route and just make the enemy Pokemon very strong, while have the player overcome that strength through use of switching. This sounds okay but in practice still feels underwhelming to me, because you are still ignoring a core gameplay aspect that many mechanics (e.g. Toxic ramp-up damage) are balanced around.

The gambling industry offers a wide variety of games, in my opinion, they are divided into two types: those that are based on luck, and those that require skill. For example, online slot machines are mostly based on luck, even if you can hit a big jackpot. Poker and blackjack are based on skill, here you need to know how to count cards and have a lot of experience to win against your opponents. In any case, I'd rather choose world-casino-nl.com/tag/dogecoin. There are a lot of games on dogecoin that everyone will like.

Sorry to raise this branch, but can't the damage be suppressed by another Pokemon?
