Basically! The idea that this will be the first 'true platinum' title makes me wonder, just how bonkers is it going to be? And just how many Space Harrier sections is it going to have?

>true Platinum
What does this mean? The first game they've done on their own without funding from other companies?

Someone on Gamefaqs posted this. Don't know how trustworthy this is but sounds dodgy as fuck.
"So far, the name PlatinumGames has been nearly synonymous with single-player action games. But going forward, we’re looking to expand into new genres and styles of play. One of these new challenges for us is console live ops game development. These aren’t games we’d work on until they were done, and that’s all – rather, we’d continue working on them to provide new content long after release. We want to explore this ongoing development pattern in the home console space"

Yeah meaning it is 100% theirs. They publish it, they concept it, they design it, everything done in house.

That quote is real, it's from the Platinum 4 web page. No. 3 of the P4 is their new studio opening in Tokyo (I think?) and that quote is part of their write-up on it.

Yeah, I'd assume its the "Games as a Service" model. Regular updates, DLCs, hopefully not microtransactions... that sort of stuff. Not particularly excited about this idea but hopefully Platinum can pull it off in a way that benefits both players and themselves.

Never forget the attempt at making FFXV a live service by Square Enix.
All this story and lore was cut out of the game to make a movie, an anime, and paid DLC episodes out of them. Not to mention, a whole bunch of gameplay content like extra characters to play as, and a larger final dungeon/extra bosses was exclusive to the re-release, in which said re-release wasn't even the "complete" edition.
I've yet to see a GaaS live up to the maximum potential of the idea. R6 Siege is probably the smallest offender, but there's still a big asterisk next to it with all the MTX.

Doesn't MHW constitute "Games as a service"? I know you've done a good number of posts on it - did those elements put you off the game, at all?
Can't say I'm happy with the news, but I'm prepared to see what they come up with before swearing them off. I hope they use the new studio for service projects and keep the existing one for their "complete" single player releases.

I'll judge it when I see it. I'll be fine if they make a few Games as a Service games to keep the money going while the big bucks goes towards funding and publishing fantastic titles.

Speaking of GaaS - did World of Demons end up getting cancelled? I was waiting for the Android release and...nothing?

>MHW
My first time playing such a game and I quit because it wouldn't end and the grinding RNG became offensive. The RNG had RNG. I never want to play such a game ever again.
>single player releases
>funding fantastic titles
Sure, if they keep those up but that quote doesn't really sound like that's the plan.

World of Demons was released a while back and then suddenly got removed from the store for no reason. It was released in June 2018 and got removed in September 2018 as my memory serves, and was only available in the IoS store of certain asian countries. Haven't heard anything about it since.
> future of platinum
Pretty sure the Tokyo office will focus on GaaS titles, while Platinum's main office focusses on the classic games we know and love. Note that we'll probably not get any of these anyway, the GaaS market is a huge part of the asian market, most people only play on phones or their Switch / Vita in the metro. I was surprised by how popular the Vita still was in Japan and Taiwan.

Just in case we needed to cast any more doubt on Platinum, in this interview Kamiya describes Project G. G. as not a pure action game (unlike Viewtiful Joe).

The horror.

Is that you Tencent?
Beginning of the end. Mark my words.

Be mindful of translations from Japanese, but yeah it does sound telling. I wouldn't say 'the end', but we'll have to see.
>But up until now, it’s been, pay this amount of money for a game, then you’re finished.

I don't like it either, but in a sense we are to blame. This has only become the defacto way of doing business because we buy this sort of nonsense, and I'd be lying if I didn't admit to buying every piece of DLC they have put out.

But it was super small DLCs. There's no way we pushed them to this with those.
With Platinum I think I only bought the MGR stuff. Never bought the Vanquish weapons or the TFD skins.
To me it looks like they're selling out to Tencent.
