Hate to link Polygon, but their article was the most thorough for once. Basically, Capcom didn't read the fine print of a texture-reference book/cd bundle in 2002 and has been using those textures without a commercial-license for the better part of 15 years. Right now they are only discovered in DMC and RE4 (probably due to them originally being the same game). During the Capcom-databreach some textures were found that even had the same file-name as the ones from the book/cd. Pretty damning.

Now, this does happen a lot. Still, it's another bad feather in Capcom's cap.. clown

Saw this mentioned on Reddit the other day - ya done goofed, Capcom. Looks pretty damning, I'd expect them to pay a settlement in the near future.

I remember Decino did a video on old-school Doom (obviously) where he was showing where some of the textures came from (the demonic goat heads and stuff like that). I think they came from a book that featured photos of various landmarks and architecture in Europe. I wonder if iD were cleared to use those back in the day.

Will it be enough to get all versions of those games removed?

I'd assume they'll stay up, but I'm not knowledgeable about these sorts of things. If Capcom settle out of court then they're effectively paying to use the photos, so nothing would change for users. If they don't pay up and it goes to court and they lose, I'm guessing that they'd have to remove their art assets that have plagiarised the original photos. Maybe the game would be removed, but I'd have thought they'd just have to update the game, in the worst case.

Nawh. The claim is that they just pay her a large sum of money to cover the damages. If they decide to not play ball though that might happen, but I think there's like a 0.1% chance it'll go that far. Stuff like this is usually just settled beforehand. They wire her the money, she drops the charges. Case closed.

I highly doubt they had any of the rights. Half the soundtrack is badly ripped Slayer tracks with some edits. If people wanted to bring them down, they would've.
Another famous one for me is the OST of Vampire The Masquarade. Studio really wanted this one band to do the album for the game, but they refused. So they just copied said album haha.

It's been happening for ages, just that Capcom got caught by someone looking for a payday which she deserved (and most likely will get). You saw the same happen with Metal Gear Solid which is rife with plagiarism, from its protagonist (name, design and all) to its music (ripped note for note from a classical composer).
