Well guys, we made it. I'm just going to lay down the information we know:

  • The game takes place long after DMC4, and maybe even after DMC2;
  • Nero is again the main protagonist, with V (a hooded figure, probably a Vergil reincarnation) and Dante as side characters;
  • The game uses an artstyle that mixes both that of DmC and DMC, which is where people got confused from;
  • It is really in line with what we knew about Itsuno and crew, who were really excited about Nero after DMC4 and wanted to make more games with him;
  • Some sort of performance boost on Xbox One X was hinted at;
  • Platforms are unknown, but it is not an Xbox One exclusive;

A brand new entry in the legendary over-the-top action series comes to Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC in Spring 2019, complete with its signature blend of high-octane stylized action and otherworldly and original characters the series is known for. Director Hideaki Itsuno and the core team have reunited to create the most over the top, technically advanced, utterly insane action experience of this generation.

Years have passed since the legions of hell have set foot in this world, but now a new demonic invasion has begun, and humanity’s last hope will rest in the hands of three lone demon hunters, each offering a radically different play style. United by fate and a thirst for vengeance, these demon hunters will have to face their demons in the hope to survive.

  • Legendary action series returns – The 16 million unit selling series is back with original Director Hideaki Itsuno at the helm of development.
  • A battle of good and evil – A demonic invasion begins with the seeds of a “demon tree” taking root in Red Grave City. This hellish incursion attracts the attention of the young demon hunter, Nero, an ally of Dante who now finds himself without his demonic arm, the source of much of his power. The supernatural family drama also continues as Dante, the Son of Sparda, seeks revenge for his brother’s corruption and mother’s murder.
  • High octane stylized action – Featuring three playable characters each with a radically different stylish combat play style as they take on the city overrun with demons.
  • Groundbreaking graphics – Developed with Capcom’s in-house proprietary RE engine, the series continues to achieve new heights in fidelity with graphics that utilize photorealistic character designs and stunning lighting and environmental effects.
  • Take down the demonic invasion – Battle against epic bosses in adrenaline fueled fights across the over-run Red Grave City.
  • Demon hunter – Nero, one of the series main protagonists and a young demon hunter who has the blood of Sparda, heads to Red Grave City to face the hellish onslaught of demons, with weapons craftswoman and new partner-in-crime, Nico.

Personally, I'm still in the 'mixed' camp. Seeing the trailer I immediately thought this would be DmC2 staring a rebooted edgy Nero. It wasn't until I saw bearded Dante near the end that I got confused, and when the logo hit moments later I was even more confused. Tons of re-used animations also felt weird. That said, I am still really hype. We get to skateboard on a missile-arm, that's just gold. Itsuno is at the helm, and I believe in him. Make it gold!

[danteeee]

PS:
Really curious if reviewers will starting shitting on DmC now when they promote DMC5, while they originally praised it to high heaven.

I like the idea of Nero's robo arm. I'm guessing it will be able to do tons of cool stuff.

I trust Itsuno's skill, but it doesn't mean he is beyond totally selling out and going with latest trends. Combat in the trailer looked solid at a glance though.

I'm kinda surprised to see Nero again. Hope Dante gets more of a show than he did in DMC 4.

Not really sure what to think of it though, it is a new game, that's great. But there's already a few things that heavily worry me.
1. Nero's new arm is apparently customizable with new versions that have unique abilities, such as the time-slow arm. While this can be great, it also opens up the door to crafting, leveling, upgrades and more stuff that we really don't want.
2. Activision is invovled.
3. Game looks really beautiful, but very westernized. With Activision behind it I get the feeling they really are aiming at the stars with this one, which isn't a great sign.
4. Animations shown so far are straight up lifted from DMC4, showing signs of rushed content.
5. Game is apparently semi-open world.

That said, it is Itsuno and I trust him.

I'm kinda surprised to see Nero again
There's a part in the official Artbook where Itsuno notes that him and the crew were pretty much done with Dante and totally in love with Nero, and they wanted to move forward with just Nero. Dante and V will probably just be side characters again.

I hope Dante has access to more than 3 guns this time. I really love Gunslinger style.

Where did they say the arm could be customized? Does that mean it can't have every ability at once?

This is hinted at, info is scarce since there was a secret presentation about the game's development only for the press but some details on it are being leaked out. We'll just have to wait and see!

You guys should have seen me when I first saw this live. I was so fucking upset by the change in art direction that I wasn't excited whatsoever. I was just sitting down with my mouth agape the entire time while my friend kept sending me nervous glances lol. Thought it was going to be a fakeout trailer and then Itsuno and the Capcom guy would reveal the real thing.

Anyway I got over it, and now I'm hyped! I still prefer the old art direction, but this grows on me the more I watch it. At the end of the day, it's still the characters we know and love, they just look a bit different. It's still our darling DMC I love you Plus, I'm sure they'll have classic outfits and stuff to unlock (or if worse comes to worse, DLC)

Gameplay looks great from what I've seen. Using 4's animation is a blessing to me. That means I really have little to worry about when it comes to the general combat, and considering this game has been in development for 4 years, and 5 when it releases, I really don't agree about this being rushed. I never thought a DMC game would ever receive that long of a dev cycle. Awesome!

Nero's Arm
So I highly doubt there is going to be crafting in this, but I think this is how they'll manage Nero's arsenal: Red Queen will be his only melee weapon, but you can have 3-4 different arms on R2 to swap to on the fly, with maybe a new gun or two on L2. These arms will obviously range from another melee-like weapon, to the time slow thing, to the traditional Devil Bringer, etc. All speculation of course but I think that's a safe bet. If so, that's basically what I wanted them to do to improve upon Nero. Dante will still be the one with the most complexities, but Nero will be more fun for the hardcore crowd to use now as well. We'll see about V.

I'm assuming there may be 3 separate campaigns this time, which would be great, assuming they do it right and the content isn't recycled.

Overall, I think it looks great, and I can't wait to see more. Apparently Sony may have a Dante trailer up their sleeves. We'll find out soon! bounce

This video also increases my hype ten-fold:

This was me during the reveal, I kid you not: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hNbb_3-WgP0

I was so angry, I cannot even comprehend it. Then I understood it was DMC5 and not DmC2, and I calmed down. But the trailer was already gone by then.

> story
Interested about when it takes place. There are talks it is after DMC2. Dante looks like he's gone through hell (literally), but his outfit and bike are different than that of DMC2. I always hoped they'd make a game that takes place after that title. Also, his bike looks like a Pandora option.

> development time
I'm still amazed about this, but with the new visual style and marketing; I think they are aiming for more than just the core in terms of sales - especially with Activision behind the scenes. Wonder how this will play out. It really looks and feels like a game for the fans though, no doubt on my mind that Vergil is in it too. Hearing the old cast returning is great too. While I never played the games for the stories, they always had 'something' for me you know. Hard to really explain but the tales, the characters - it meant something to me in some regard.
Previous games in the series did have longer development times too though. But still, not like this. Let me just say I pray it isn't rushed in terms of feeling and content, take your time Itsuno...make us the purest gold because after this we're probably done.

> ARMS
Apparently Nero is carrying multiple arms in the trailer at some points. So he'll probably be able to swap between them (maybe like styles?) at will.
So far this E3 really is a good one for us action fans. Babylon Falls, DMC5, Sekiro, FotNS etc. Good times!

Haha I don't blame you. I seriously thought it was DmC2 for a while too, then the new art style chapped my ass for a few hours before I accepted it and got excited again. Quite the roller coaster lol

Story
It may take place after DMC2 but nothing has been confirmed yet. Wouldn't mind it, but I also couldn't care less if they just forgot about it completely and this is just after DMC4. It's not like DMC2 was the only time Dante has ridden a Motorcycle after all. In any case, plot setup seems really cool, and Vergil seems to be more viscous than ever. Cutting off his son's arm like it's nothing?  affraid  Stone cold. Can't wait to hear more!

Dev Time
Where have you heard that Activision is involved with this? I haven't heard a single word about that from anyone. Did you just get it confused with Sekiro? They're not even listed in the trailer or the website.

I'm not worried at all. Seeing Itsuno get so fired up on stage and excited about the game to the point where he cried afterwards shows to me that they're creating something amazing.

Arms
Yep now that I think about it the arms may just be D-Pad commands, which I'm all for. Can't wait to see Uncle Dante in action. He's gonna be nuts. Let's hope Ninja Gaiden, Vanquish, God Hand, etc. comes back as well! Gotta get the gang back together!

Hopefully they give Dante more guns this time. Gunslinger is my favorite style in DMC3 which had more guns but only two equipped at once.

I am really impressed with how they turned him around in such a fashion. He went from Nero The Zero to Nero The Hero for me with thise change. Apparently we'll get Dante footage either around Gamescom or TGS, should be interesting.

The only thing that keeps throwing me off about the game play is that it looks slow... but then I realize it's not being played in Turbo Mode. If you play the video at 1.25x speed it looks great lol. Nero is looking awesome so far. He'll probably still be the easiest character to play as overall, but his expanded move-set is very, very welcome. I wonder how many Devil Breakers he can use? Only time will tell. Dante's character trailer is going to be wicked. Can't wait to hear, "SWORDTRICKSWORDTRICKSWORDTRICKROYALGUARD."

Apparently the third character (I'm assuming it's Vergil) will be able to summon demonic bodyguards. That's very interesting, but I'm not sure how that would work, or be fun. Does anybody have an example of another game doing that as part of the main combat system?

Side note, it's hilarious how different Itsuno is from Kamiya personality wise. One is this adorable little nerd, and the other is a quick to anger pervert. I love them both.

>Nero
If they let him switch arms we could be looking at close to Dante's variety.

>Dante
I'm starting to think that the reason he only had 3 of each weapon in 4, was because that's all the controller (and people's fingers) could handle. I imagine he'll have style switching still, but I'm hoping for some way to have more weapons at once without the button layout being stupid. Royal Guard could possibly be something like MGR so you always have access to it.

I was thinking the exact same thing Bird, Chaos Legion; his design even seems a bit similar to Sieg wouldn't you say? But yeah it is high on my list of games that I really need to dig deeper into. Birdman is the expert bar none.

> Dante
Dante was rushed out the door sadly in DMC4, the game was originally Nero only as the team wanted to soft reboot the series. Testers and early adopters didn't like this, so he was shipped in. He was originally just a guest character from what I could gather.

Honestly though I hope they go back to a DMC3 style of design, I really prefered its more tactical nature (so switch styles at the statues or intro-menu).

That video just shows quickly and clearly a few samples of legions but I'll leave it at that.

But what I should do is check the staff list for both games. I'll scream if I see the same names. While that doesn't mean the game will be CL2, it's possible there could be some influence. Like they could have got the idea for summoning phantoms then maybe someone remembered CL and asked around.

Here's the first list google offered. See if you recognise anyone.

Is it known yet exactly who is involved in DMC5 other than Itsuno?

Chaos Legion
Thanks for the example Bird. I can definitely see how summoning demons could be really cool. If I see Chaos Legion for a cheap price I'll pick it up. It looks like a nice hidden gem. Getting back to DMC5, I think I want to see a video detailing the new character's moveset next. Very curious to see V in action. They can save Dante for last as I'm assuming he'll still be the most complex character, so it would be better to show the other characters first, and the best boy should be saved for last anyway  Wink

Styles
I would be alright with being able to select up to four or five styles at a divinity statue, with the option to subtract styles as well, but taking it away and making it like DMC3 would be a huge regression. Having the option to have as many or as few styles as you want would be cool though.

DMC5 Dev Team
Itsuno confirmed in an interview with Mixer that he tried to get virtually everyone who worked on DMC 3+4 to work on 5, so they're basically the same exact team! Also, in case anyone was wondering, Yuji Shimomura is also returning to direct the cutscenes.

> Yuji

The scene at 07:01, still my favorite.

> Styles
I am still doubting. On one hand, I want DMC3 style switching again since I felt it added that tactical edge, but on the other hand, just go nuts. Its DMC and tactics in menus isn't something it should be about.

> worries
My biggest worry still is the multiple characters. Generally games with this tend to either not be balanced around them i.e. enemies that are more generic meatbags since they can't play into a character's core mechanics since they also need to work on others. Really hope they make the right call and give enemies unique weaknesses to certain characters, or just straight up make some enemies exclusive to certain player characters (basically just making it three short action games in one). To me it is still why DMC3 is the best one, since the whole game was built around our boy Dante, while in 4 he was more a guest star in a game revolving around Nero the Zero.

> wishes
As noted above, I hope for a level of balance. But in terms of mechanics, and this sort of plays into the cutscene I just linked, I hope for combinations of weapons. Having attacks that only exist if you have a combination equipped, like if you press Triangle with E&I and Rebellion instead of doing his regular three hit combo you can press square at the same time too to have him shoot while slashing.  Kind of like the double button tap attacks in Soul Calibur. Or being able to throw your sword but PUSH it further by shooting a bullet at it, these things would offer a lot of creative freedom (but be hell on animators and combat designers). I do think it would add that next level of crazy.

> Chaos Legion
It is a Capcom game. It is just really bad at explaining on how to play it and its playstyle. I was stuck on some chapters for a long time and had no clue on how to even play, had to be schooled.

>Styles
I was thinking add more guns and melee weapons, and have them on slots instead of styles. Imagine Gunslinger in DMC3 with all those guns at once.

I think it might not be possible to have that many weapons as well as styles at once though. There isn't enough space on the controller. Had a chat with a pal who had some interesting ideas like double tapping, but I don't know how it would work out.

>Schooled in CL
And there is more schooling yet to be done with you my boy. KNEEL.

And did you see Dante's motorcycle? WTF was that thing? Looks like a demonic version of something out of Kamen Rider.  Would be insane if it transformed into a weapon or you could actually ride on it in battle. Will be so cool if it talks. I don't know, I guess the look of it makes me think there's more to it, otherwise why not ride in on the same looking one he left on in DMC2?

I think the bike is a mode of Pandora, would be pretty sweet. In terms of bike etc, his clothes are also already different in that shot. I would love for the game to introduce him by having him driving out of hell on his DMC2 bike wearing his DMC2 outfit; it is still his most amazing outfit ever. I mean just look at it! Such a shame that such an amazing design is buried because the game isn't as loved.

Styles
That's why being able to control how many styles you have at once would be a great idea. And going off Bird's idea for having more guns, if you decide to only have Gunslinger equipped on the D-pad, then you could use the extra D-pad buttons for guns, along with L2 for even more guns. In that way the trade off element of DMC3 is still there, but you can also just play the game like DMC4 if you want. Everybody wins!

Worries
Once again, I get the concern, but DMC4 was made in 2-ish years, this is being made in 5 years with multiple characters planned from the start. I'm sure they'll have more than enough time to figure it out.

Wishes
That's an interesting idea you have there about multiple button presses! I haven't heard that one before, and I think that would be an awesome idea. I can't wait to see what they're doing with the combat, right now it's just pure speculation after all. Itsuno is going to be on a Capcom stream on the 20th, so hopefully they show some more DMC5 there. I don't want to wait for Gamescom...

Speaking of wishes though, I really hope they try and top DMC1 in terms of atomsphere. We've only seen one environment so far, so I don't want to speak too quickly, but I really hope we're not in a regular looking city for most of the game. I have a feeling the game's environments will get more creepy and twisted as we progress through the game. Well, I would like to think so at least lol

Chaos Legion
I'll keep my eye on this one. There are so many obscure Stylish Action games I haven't even heard of, let alone the popular ones that I haven't played yet. I still need to get around to God Hand for instance.

Motorcycle
If Nero can ride his arm, Dante should be able to ride his bike! Being a form of Pandora is an awesome idea. That's one weapon that needs to return, and get expanded upon. Another thing I thought of, seeing as the new Smash brought back every character, how cool would it be if DMC5 brings back every weapon Dante ever used? Would be awesome to see Cerberus or Alastor again. It's a pipe dream, but man that would be amazing.

DMC2 Outfit
We'll see if this really does take place after 2, but I feel like they would have come out and mentioned it already. To be honest I've never really understood the absolute reverence for this design, it looks nice, but he's also wearing some weird ass skirt thing. Maybe my opinion of DMC2 is affecting my judgement lol I still like DMC1 Dante the best; maybe a bit too much red though.

BTW I haven't forgot about the "Chatting about Games" topic Roy. I'll get back to you soon.

KAJI:

> styles
Apparently Itsuno mentioned something about buying chips for buffs or something that break when you take damage? I only saw some notes on a twitter account about this and didn't dig deeper.
I like the 'styles within styles' idea. Sounds interesting!

> worries
I hope so. Graphics don't come cheap and stretch out development time more and more. Really wish the industry would move past that desire and just focus on the gameplay. As long as it looks sharp, has good artdirection and runs at 60fps we don't need each of Dante's hobo-hairs to be animated individually haha.

> DMC1 style atmosphere
While I'd love it, I think it won't work. The reason being the same was DMC2 Dante's outfit, it used to be the style but it doesn't fit anymore. The series was gothic, now it is more anime-crazy with a goth flavor. And now, well now it is weird neon realistic fluff haha.
Still, that feeling of atmosphere and absolute insanity that the original and 3 had, sign me up if they do that. DMC1 still creeps me out in some places with really creepy visuals and soundeffects.

> God Hand
Wow, yeah, that's a pretty big one to still dive into. It is a long game though, so don't buy it for a quick round in between games. Put some months aside for it. It is worth it!

> Bike
It is funny in a way, years and years ago (I think it was on the DMC3HD board on Gfaqs) I wrote out a weapon concept of a Bike weapon for DMC5. The idea was that Dante would pretty much wield it like a nunchuck via the stearing wheel (kind of like in the cutscene in 3), you could hold down buttons to have the wheels 'grind' on the foes. The bike was also possessed by a demon and could breath fire, because of course it could!

> Every weapon
I'd love this. While I love Rebellion and the Punch/Kick weapon, they lacked the style of the old gear. Alastor deserves a spotlight again, as does Nevan, Cerberus and A&R. Would be insanely cool to see those return.

> DMC2 Dante
The outfit is as Goth as you can get. Guy looks like he walked straight out of Vampire: The Masquarade Bloodlines (good game, buggy as hell). I would never fit in the more recent games as I noted above, but I really love the design still. Skirt and all ;p

> Chatting about
No worries, take your time!

>Bike weapon concept
What you described is one of the most awesome things I've ever heard. I'm serious. They have to do this now.

>Chaos Legion
It's clear all they really did was drive-by play-throughs. A lot of the movement problems they describe are most like them summoning too much and being limited to walking. I think there's only one guy who called it trash which Devil Triggered me, and the rest have no concept of depth. I'm also surprised to see it mentioned.

>Curse of Darkness
How so? It's pretty much your average action game except you can summon Innocent Devils, which are AI partners in some ways similar to Legions. Mechanics are different though. They have some limited behavior settings and the big difference being they can block. When set to do this they create a ring of light and you'll both be temporarily safe inside it. It gets smaller when attacked (or is it over time?). I think I need to revisit this game.

There are a more development options, in that IDs evolve and you can take them down certain paths to get different forms. Honestly forget the in-depth details despite having played it quite a bit. Solid game though.

Is it thought that the third character is the guy who attacks Nero in the trailer? that dude looks like a zombie.

> Bike Concept
Ha! Thanks man! Still a bit proud of it, maybe one day when making 3d action games has become really easy I'll make it myself.

> Chaos Legion
To be fair, the game was really cryptic. Even with your help I got stuck pretty fast. Small menus, a story that ties in with a manga/anime(?), I honestly had no clue what was even going on. What really grinds me gears always though is that when people just make conclusions without diving in or asking around. It isn't that hard to talk to someone. I remember when I first started Viewtiful Joe I got stuck pretty fast. I remembered GEN2000 was pretty slick at it so I messaged him. Worked out fine after that when he gave me some tips.

> Curse
More like the animation and general look and feel. Very early PS2 era graphics, always looks off to me. Wasn't talking about the gameplay.

> V
Yeah he's basically the zombie guy back from the dead. It is Vergil, no doubt. Would be interesting if they made his basic moveset that of Nero Angelo (I refuse to use the mistranslated name), while having the ability to summon demons and swords. Always liked how with some tweaking you could play as Nero Angelo in DMC3: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ThUDAIkpJMU
It is neat little details like this in games that today would just be DLC. I'm honestly surprised they didn't make it DLC for the HD collection.

>Bike
I mentioned this on GameFaqs, in a recent episode of Into the Badlands, the main character fought three guys with a ladder. It wasn't comedic either (I'm sure a lot of people would think Jackie Chan at the mention of a ladder used in martial arts) and was actually quite brutal. Problem is it was mostly getting the enemies stuck in the rungs then throwing them around. You can probably imagine what I mean. Wouldn't fit in DMC in that way, but I bet they could come up with all kinds of cool strikes for it.

>Chaos Legion
You'll learn, if you haven't already, that mentioning this game makes me write essays whether I want to or not. Enjoy.

Let me know if you decide to play it again. Once you get how the system works, which won't take long, you can apply it on any stage. The whole game is just linear pathways with room after room of enemies. A lot of people hated it for this, but personally I didn't (and still don't) give a shit. Gameplay first boy.

Though yeah, it can be a bit cryptic I guess. It does tell you the basics, like enemy types, but there's more to it when it comes to actually identifying them. The big newbie killers (based on what I've heard over the years) is the monster generators. Those stationary tower things.

These, when hit on their main body, give off the sound effect, and hit effect of an organic type enemy. But they don't function like one at all. To be fair, they are sort of special, but still, it lead to many players getting infuriated. I even knew a few who were great at DMC games but got trashed by CL.

The generator simply has super high defense. It doesn't really matter what you hit the main body with. The reason is because they make the monsters and they're sitting ducks.

A lot of people would fight monsters and not see an end in sight, then go for the generators which are always heavily guarded, and get utterly destroyed by surrounding enemies. On top of that, it appears that you are barely doing damage to them.

Worse yet, this game has one of the hardest new games you'll find (at least in the PS2 days) because you have such low health and defense in the first few stages. Certain enemies will kill you in one-two hits early on, and enemies will attack you from off screen.

The other main problem is playing it like DMC or whatever other games where you just run in with some sword guy. There's this tall alien looking monsters that loves destroying new people too. It has really long arms and a lot of different attacks that trigger depending on your position.

Back to those generators though. I've mentioned their weak point before, which is the metal part on top. These generators only show up from stage 3 onward, after you get Malice which is strong against metal. Still, it's not at all obvious what their weak point is. I saw it pretty fast, but so many don't expect the enemy to have two different parts to it.

The devs wanted you to have the option to keep killing enemies for exp, or kill the generator to wipe out everything in the area. Also, after a certain amount of enemies have been created, the generator gets tired and slumps over. In this state, it loses all of its defense and goes down in a few hits. I don't mind this type of thing though as I love figuring stuff out.

This is going to sound weird, but in the future, I plan to block my whole screen with paper or something and play by the radar alone to see how far I get. The radar shows a simple outline of the area so you know if you're traveling in the right direction, and after years of playing nothing but this shit, I've gotten to a point where I know what an enemy is doing based on how the dots representing them on the radar are moving. Obviously, I'm going to get destroyed at some point, but I want to give it a go anyway. Can't be worse than that guy who played some Nintendo game like Mario 64 or Zelda with his hands and controller submerged in a bowl of honey. I think it was a speedrun too.

>Curse
Oh yeah, it does have this look to it. The animations are fast, but they seem sort of wooden. Many people criticize how the stages repeat paths and rooms too.

>V
When he flips Nero with what looks like a shoulder toss, you can see his face from the nose down. Looks like that evil, deformed emperor from Star Wars. All white and gross.

I didn’t quite know if it was Nero until I heard and saw him proper, he looks a lot like Donté to me now with the outfit and short hair and similar face(but more jovial attitude, courtesy of Johnny Yong Bosch).

The art in general on a glance looked more like a sequel to DmC than DMC. I do dig the art for areas and enemies in DmC so that’s a plus, I found DMC 2 and 3 had a lot of bland looking areas, not all but a lot lacked the oppressive gothic and demonic architecture of 1 and varied gorgeous vistas in 4.

Haven’t seen much, it looks nice but the demons so far look a bit generic on a glance(I saw about 2-3 types without observing in detail). I prefer the art of 1 and 4(the art in 4 looked like an evolution of 1 than 3) the most, detailed textures and realistic human proportions but still stylised areas, creatures and animations. Wonder what the themes are for areas this time, Urban?

I’d like to see the dodging as it was mentioned making dodging more ‘smooth/fluid’, I suppose they where thinking of a less stiff input and motion(3 inputs as well as based on direction character is facing the kids won’t like that). I’m thinking they might be applying some their experience on how DmC movement worked into V(how it’s all directions, which is more lenient but PG’s catalogue and countless others a have that as a standard). Could someone kindly give me a time stamp of Nero dodging please? If it exists.

I also would like to see a playful jab at DmC, a more sincere one not cynical and resentful.

I didn't think he was Donte either, but worse: I thought this was DmC2 staring reb00t Nero. The artstyle really is more leaning towards DmC's attempt at realism (ending in more uncanney valley than anything else).

Really miss the gothic vibe from the older games though. The enemies look like something out of X-com. Though some do look like a return to form with DMC3's enemies making a return as shown in the extended demo.

Chaos Legion mentioned. Interesting to see how much it's popping up since a summoning character was announced. That's due to CL being the premiere summoning game of all time.

Ignore the title. Nothing has been revealed. It's just this guy's thoughts.

I always despise these clickbait titles of "revealed" only to have it be some hacky theory. Same with the Dragon Ball Z community "identity of the mysterious villain confirmed" only to be followed by some conspiracy theory...

A few people complained about it in the comments too.

As for what he said on CL, I disagree on parts. He seems to think Itsuno could take ideas from CL and 'bring out their full potential' or something. I disagree. Some elements would work in DMC5 like quick assists (which would basically function like any other weapon attack) and counter hits. I imagine some of these summons could hang around and do something though.

Other than that, converting everything to DMC style is dumb, taking away all uniqueness doesn't improve anything. I want Ono to make a sequel to CL that builds upon CL, not trying to make it into another DMC.

Overlord actually does this in terms of minion control, allowing to you move your units together in a group with the right stick, called 'swarming'. You can also equip different types and they are always on the field, so you can have the ranged type throwing fireballs from a distance, then have your melee type fighting up close. It's really fantastic.

And if you lifted these mechanics and put them in CL today, they would actually work without conflicting with existing mechanics. The downside is that the Overlord himself is not even close to Sieg's level of mobility and attack variety, but then they are different games.

I find it a bit degrading, the way people talk about older games at times. "Yeah that was nice, but now they can do it good". They didn't even play those games, good chance the guy who made the video never even played CL or knows how it really works. I know I didn't (and got my ass handed to me).

I actually had a decent talk about this with SBK. We talked a bit about how everyone wants everything to be DMC4 and compares it to that, while the game might even try to be something completely different. You don't see me asking for a boostslide in freak'n SpaceMarine, wouldn't fit. Then you get into the whole 'depth' discussion again, where most just throw the term out at random not having a clue as to what it means (charming).

In terms of CL, I think better control over the minions would be paramount. Give them orders maybe with the Dpad, allow switching between them perhaps or at least bring 2 or 3 into a level so you don't screw yourself over while still keeping that tactical edge.

I think he played it, but not for very long and didn't look below surface level. The mechanics he described are basic and you can find them in the instruction manual.

"Yeah that was nice, but now they can do it good".
It's annoying because for most people this just means 'add 1000 moves and weapons'.

I think better control over the minions would be paramount.
As you know, I'm not against improvements. As CL stands, it's still pretty good. It requires a bit of work to maintain the legions. It requires NOT playing like Ono wanted, going by how he described his vision in the video which is our army vs theirs in all out brawls. I feel that type of game would require different mechanics.

Give them orders maybe with the Dpad,
Good idea. The D-pad gets no use at all. The only order you can give is Force, which makes a legion attack furiously with a 'special attack' it wouldn't use otherwise. While these all have different properties, the command itself is simple.

I have more to say but have to go to the office. I'll continue this post there while I'm slacking off.

It's hard to say. I'm not too sure what other orders would fit. Passive mode is ordering them to stay close in defensive formation.

Malice and Arrogance are the only ones where passive affects them differently. Malice (bow) will remain in place letting you move away while still being able to order it to attack, and Arrogance (shield) stays in place too, to draw attention and build charge.

I though about a dodge order but not sure. Unless you're keeping a close eye on them you'll never know if one off-screen is in need of dodging. And since there are multiple legions, how could we order them? All at once? Maybe, but what if only one needs to dodge and the rest are doing fine? I can see why dodging isn't a thing for legions as it doesn't seem to fit. That, and recalling is essentially a dodge too.

allow switching between them perhaps or at least bring 2 or 3
You can bring two types but can only summon one at a time. Did you mean having two on the field at once?

This would work because Overlord does it. As I remember, you can even choose the exact amount of minion types.

I hope they do something really interesting with this weapon. I'm thinking revving and grinding the wheels on enemies for added hits and properties. This could be something you can add to any hit, sort of like Bayonetta's guns.

One thing that I am wondering: how will this affect his speed? The weapon (and combat in general) seems very slowed down so far.

I thought the speed would be generally slower after hearing about the animation canceling thing. That requires more time to even be visible and it seems they really want to do away with those snappy, instant movements.

Looks like Nero has DBZ finishers now and these break the arms. Need more info.

Some good notes, but I'm also seeing a lack of updates to Nero. Dante always got a big update and change going from game to game in terms of moveset, and Nero right now feels more like he's 'finished' if you get my drift. All in all the game really seems to look great, but I'm also getting distinct "this is DMC4.2" vibes compared to an actual DMC5.
The Devil Breakers seem like a neat concept but their implementation (such as the break system) seems dangerous. It can either turn bosses into "spam breaker" or have them be useless. Also, is it me or does it look really slow? Could just be the lack of Turbo Mode, but dunno.

All in all I'm still not as excited as I thought I'd be. There's a lot to love and Itsuno's passion is on big display which is great to see, but I guess I'm just really careful with my hype for this game. Will get it for sure though and rip through it no doubt!

I'm really happy to hear though that the game takes place after DMC2 storywise, makes me wonder if we'll see Lucia. Hope the DMC2 costumes make a return in some way.

Why, in previous games, did they add turbo mode later? I get DMC3 because it was the first time but then they didn't add it to DMC4 until later. Why not just include it from the start?

DMC3 was, as noted, the first time. DMC4 wasn't possible on the PS3/X360 architecture I believe and it was always in the PC version of regular DMC4 from what I can recall. The Special Edition got it because of the increased power of the PS4/X1.

DmC got it later because 'fuck the fans' I'd say. Not sure why it isn't in DMC5 yet.

Oh yeah I forgot about the PC version. As for DmC, I guess that was because NT didn't care for such things.

They have no excuse at this point. Maybe it's like I said, not possible if you want the animation thing but I'm just guessing. Got no idea how it actually works.
