Just making this for any random MGR stuff.

Possible new convert. I've directed him to the MGR boards as the PS4 board is a cesspool of those who hate good mechanics.

I still have a log on my computer with all the topics of information and stuff I have on this game from Gamefaqs. Going to put it on my to-do list to write it all down here in a massive post of data. Still love this game.

With the exception of a few: absolutely ass.

I like the idea of missions that sort of change the status quo, but they were very limited in their setup. There was no 'alternative' way of thinking allowed.

I didn't like that you were limited to just a non-upgraded HF Sword. I think I should play them again since I can't remember if the boss weapons were usable. I think they are but not upgraded.

I need to get back to this game. Love it.

My dad thought Armstrong was hilarious but he doesn't get Raiden. At first he thought Raiden was the bad guy, and in general thinks he's a freak. He actually asked me why I'm playing as a freak.

As someone who plays this on PS3, I sometimes have problems with Blade Mode. When you keep on cutting someone, you just stop when you hit the red box. Also when I keep slashing at the front shield of one of those robots, when I reach the second stage the slashing does work. However it doesn't cut.

You need meter for the Blade Mode to have its cutting capabilities, otherwise its just a low damage attack. If you hit the red-box you 'need' to use the Zandatsu. You can ignore it if you wish, just takes a few s econds.

For harder enemies you need to soften them up first before you can cut. Cuttable parts turn blue :)

The best blade depends on what you're fighting. Armour Breaker is best against any enemy with armour and pretty much breaks the game in half. Muramasa is the best against bosses thanks to its high attackspeed and high damage.

I just didn't feel that the dial-combos were that distinct, or interesting in their feel or effect, compared so something like Ninja Gaiden. Also not a fan of shoehorned ranged combat, and stealth mechanics.

Hm, to each their own. The game is more made around the auto-combo (square) for dps, while other moves have different properties or uses. I.e. Y.XY being a sweep for infinites or a low-launcher, YYXY being a quick version of YYYXY, which is the highest damaging combo around if you have specific punishes in mind etc. Some are for single target, others for multi-target. Lots of stuff going around.

Stealth is optional mind you, just a nice way to circumvent some of the more annoying fights if you wish (or get really hard ones). It is pretty barebones I admit but still feels cheeky and fun imo. Not sure what you mean with ranged combat, the helicopter fight?

Just in case.

I actually do like the VR Missions. It's getting to 1st place that is a problem for me. I also went to a Metal Gear Rising stream and I saw some tips. I have yet to try them out but I think I can post a couple that I can remember.

You can use the Pincer Blades whenever Monsoon will throw the helicopters at you. Use Spiral Hand for minimal damage. You can use the Pincer Blades on the spinning wheel and destroy it while having the biggest combo which can help increase the rank.

I wonder if story-wise Raiden has never bought the boss weapons. After the first and "second" phase in the Armstrong boss fight, he doesn't have them anymore.

Okay, started, and finished in one day, damn, that was kind of short (But I skipped all the cutscenes).

So, like I said, my impressions of this game are way more positive than the first time I played at the start of February, or, just over a month I had started playing Ninja Gaiden, so unfair comparisons were super abound. Not to mention, for some reason, MGR was running absolutely terribly on my PC at that time.

Now, I haven't played the higher difficulties yet (But I do plan to), but as of now, it's an 8, or 8.5/10 from me. A-tier action game, definitely. My main gripes were that the camera swings and jerks around quite a lot for some reason, even after a mod that I used which zoomed the camera the fuck out, as well as too many cutscenes/QTEs during fights and boss fights. I don't mind the occasional QTE during a cutscene, but please don't throw those into the core gameplay, getting damaged is enough punishment for screwing something up. I shouldn't need to tire out my thumb more, or have to move my right hand to the left stick to waggle as fast as I can (For thumbstick QTEs, I like to use my right palm to shake the stick really, really fast). Game definitely goes a bit into style over substance at times, but it's still good.

Any tips for the higher difficulties? Like, best moves for each enemy, and each situation?

>waggle escape
I hate that shit so much. They should have made it like fighting games where you have to time your throw escape. Reminds me of Fatal Frame 1, where if you got grabbed, which is pretty much what the majority of ghosts would do, you had press something at a specific frame and it was hard as fuck. Most people don't even know it exists in that game as the it tells you nothing about this. In later games, it mentions it but FF5 just made it an easy mash escape.

Basically nailed my complaints of the game as well, camera and QTEs. Thankfully the QTEs follow a 'pattern'. There's two types, one is always the same in puts and those that are randomized follow a distinct pattern. So after Triangle it will always be square for instance, stuff like that. Note, the game was made in around 11 months, which is absolutely crazy considering the content available. Let that sink in.

> Higher difficulties
There's Very Hard and Revengeance. The latter is kind of a 'joke' difficulty where everything is upped to insane degrees. Enemy agression and damage output gets a 1000% (no typo) increase, while your parry gets *the same*. A perfect parry on that mode can easily deal up to 60-80% damage to bosses if it connects.
Very Hard is just the hardest regular mode.

Regarding upgrades, it really depends how badly you just want to snap the game in half. MGR:R is a constant case of self handicapping. If you want to laugh, upgrade the armour-breaker against regular enemies. Walk up to them with blade mode (hold L3 to walk during it iirc) and just mash buttons until you get your free refill and clear entire fights without taking a stratch. Muramasa is the best weapon against bosses due to its speed and attack buff.

Skyhigh (>>S) is the strongest move in the game. There's some other great moves too like the general Pincer combo or T,delay,S,T. ALso practice with Blade Mode Canceling I'd say!

You can watch my MGR:R bible if you want. Its my handicapped S-rank run on my channel, most call it the bible since it has all the tricks in it.

Played through this over the weekend. My save file had mysteriously vanished so started over on normal. I was surprised and disgusted at how much I'd forgotten. I couldn't even fight properly.

Got the hang of it a few stages in, but forgot how most bosses work.

I stuck with the HF blade and mostly used the sai as my secondary if I used one at all. I like the paralysis effect.

Favorite moves are that palm thrust and quick draw. I like to launch, palm, blade mode cancel, chase and slide into them. There's tons of cool shit like this with blade mode cancelling.

My wife raised a tough question. If he's strong enough to throw the Ray sky high, wtf is blocking and slashing its feet for?

> tough question
"Rule of cool" haha. That said in-game I think the reasoning is that Raiden sometimes overcharges his suit's abilities. You can see him 'glow' a bit when he throws Ray up iirc, like he's entering "super mode" or something. But honestly it is just rule of cool. Like how Dante can do all these sick things in DMC's cutscenes, but in gameplay a simple bullet will kill him.

> favourites
Quick Draw is so cool, shame it sucks so bad on higher settings since enemies can parry it (somehow) which stops the move dead in its tracks. Want to revisit this game again in the future, it was the game where I made my mark in the genre but by god have I gotten rusty haha

Which enemies parry it? I don't recall much opposition but then again I mainly used it when an enemy was in some kind of state. Always hit the Grad with it when it was stunned.

> Quick Draw
I think it was Marshal Guards and Marshal Mastiffs (Marshal being the black-elites), they would parry it which would result in it bouncing. You had the same problem with Stormbringer (the 360 input), which led to it not being too useful.

Felt the move was pretty cool, but lacked really behind in terms of damage-per-second making it more of a style-move with sweet knockback. I do admit I'm happy it doesn't save the charge though, would've resulted the constant charge-dodging you see in Bayonetta and I didn't like that one bit.

I don't use quick draw much on human types. Just the bigger ones after they're stunned. I wonder if the uncharged version has any weird utility?

Flashbacks of very hard double Grad fight.

The enemies are so good. Like Raptors. I cut the legs off one and left it to deal with the other. It kept firing its rocket launcher. Another would send out those purple orbs.

I can't believe how much I forgot. Totally forgot how to fight Sam after he drops his sword.

Why do Youtubers review games like this years later but fail to actually talk about gameplay systems? KBash did a video on this and gushed about the game but didn’t really say anything, just made a bunch of loud noises and shitty jokes. He also said it’s a good place to start if you’ve never played a Metal Gear before. What the fuck?

Currently trying to S rank Rev and having a ton of fun killing everything with the Sai and Ripper Mode. It's really a great game, it has become one of my favourites just after a couple of playthroughs.
Anyway, the game has some really solid mechanics but there is one that I wasn't able to understand or find anything about it online. How does stunning works in this game exactly? I don't know if it's based on the number of hits, the damage or tied to some stun value each attack has (maybe it's a mixture of all three). Does anyone know how it works? It seemed weirdly inconsistent to me.

Stunning works pretty wonky. Basically every hit has a specific stun-value that fills an invisible meter, if it fills up completely, the enemy is stunned. There's a kicker though, if YOU get hit, the stun value of enemies drains pretty heavily. So it's more a reward for you playing perfect than keeping up the pressure. If you leave enemies alone for a bit it also depletes though, but getting hit really nukes it IIRC.

The exception is of course the Stun Blade, which just has a % chance of it happening.

Some hits have a lot of stun, mostly the heavy enders. You can also grind some easy quick-stuns by doing the first few hits with the pole-arm, canceled with blademode.
