Guess this shows it, Platinum and Square became bunk-buddies after Nier: Tomato.

What is it with devs not showing gameplay? Surely they have some available?

I know right? Feels...so weird. Like with a sequel I get it, you can get hype. But this tells me NOTHING.

Then let's speculate!

Looks like that knight didn't have his own weapon, and has some sort of energy tendril that stole the enemy's weapon.

Could it be indicative of a weapon stealing mechanic? Not something we see often, in fact, I think the only game I know of is El Shaddai.

There's nothing really known about the director yet. Kamiya doesn't seem to be involved, Inada made the blog post about it - but since he's the head of the whole studio that could mean anything.

The huge suits of armor don't look really mobile, would be interesting to see a Japanese developer make an action game about tanking hits instead of dodging them, would be cool to see how that would work. Tendrils seem interesting, perhaps a weapon steal mechanic as you note. Could also be an indication of the weapon being more ranged ala Kratos' blades of chaos.

Here's the lore, courtesy of https://www.reddit.com/user/captain_tedious:
All the text I could make out below. Some of the dates may slightly be off as they didn't always stop changing at the same point the text was most clear. Will update this if anyone spots any mistakes.
CE 5000 Discovery of the Oversoul: During Albenland's era of expansion, its people discover an unknown energy known as the Oversoul.
CE 5017 The Age of Dawn: After years of experimentation, the Helos Empire succeeds at developing weapons that harness the Oversoul.
CE 5061 The Oversoul Prophecies: A small group of seers hailing forma ll kingdoms use crystallized Oversoul fragments to predict the future and write down these prophecies in the Ephesian Book.
CE 5087 The Apocalypse: The seers have visions of an all consuming darkness.
CE 5096 Waland's Journey: By the order of the Helos Empire, Waland travels to the darklands to the far south foretold by the Ephesian Book as the location of mankind's revival.
CE 5109 The Soul Riots: With resentment rising against the ruling class over its use of the Oversoul, riots break out among the masses.
CE 5111 World War: As the rulers of each kingdom turn against their respective populaces, the riots escalate into full-blown war.
CE 5200 Divine Punishment: Disgusted by humanity's unwillingness to learn from its past mistakes, the elder gods unleash their wrath upon mankind.
CE 5205 Birth of a Goddess: With the purpose of rescuing humanity from the brink of extinction a new goddess Gaia is born.
CE 5208 Birth of a New World: Gaia creates a new world in order to give humanity one last chance.
CE 5220 Age of Harmony: Humans begin to inhabit the new world, and a period of peace follows.
CE 5338 Scholars of Gaia: Concerned about people losing their faith in Gaia, the high priest Darius forms a consort known as the Scholars of Gaia.
CE 5356 War of Beliefs: Unable to overcome their ideological differences, the Scholars of Gaia and the Helios Order start engaging in frequent skirmishes.
CE 5347 End of a Dream: The public execution of a nonbeliever by the Scholars of Gaia creates tension among the masses
CE 5385 Spread of the Soul Plague: The unexplained outbreak of the soul plague prompts the different factions to capitalize on the people's fear and expand their efforts to convert the masses.
CE 5430 New World Academy: Fearing for the future of mankind after rediscovering the Ephesian Book, the seer Maria forms the New World Academy amid the rapidly worsening war.
CE 5450 Punishment: On the Day of Judgment, Gaia turns against mankind.
CE 5475 Awakening: Deep within the Shrine of Souls, the Nomads are born.
CE 5500 Rebirth: Led by the Nomads, Humanity strikes back against Gaia.

EDIT: first 'screenshot' / 'poster' showed four characters standing under the logo. Perhaps its a team-game? Or a medival styled beat'm up like Dragon's Crown?

Possibly, but that conflicts with how quick the tendril could strike.

I see the word 'soul' used a bit in the text. We could be looking at a possession mechanic of some sort.

Is this the “bring new innovations to the genre” game that was teased? Baby Loyds is it?

Well I can tell you: Nothing can innovate more than KNACK$ 2 can. #GetKnackedOrGetOut

Unconfirmed. We do know the same team as Nier: Tomato is working on it with the exception of Taro. I think this is Platinum knowing where the money is and playing on it.
